The District Marketplace of Fontibón is a key point in the commercial and cultural life of Bogotá. Located in the heart of the district of Fontibón, it boasts a history spanning 46 years and has established itself as one of the most important marketplaces in the city. It maintains its roots and the essence of product exchange that has characterized it since its beginnings.
Originally situated in the Foundational Square of Fontibón, the marketplace was inaugurated in its current location in 1969 by then-Mayor Virgilio Barco. In its early years, the market operated in a modest one-story building and quickly developed into a social, cultural, and economic meeting point. Over the years, it became a space for the exchange and barter of goods, attracting peasants, traders, and travelers from the Cundinamarca-Boyacá highlands, which has contributed to the cultural blend that characterizes the space today.
Currently, the marketplace features 218 commercial establishments that offer a wide variety of fresh and local products. It continues to preserve the value of traditional markets, connecting urban life with rural traditions and providing the community with a gathering space that supports the local economy and culture.
